Woest Pieter

1 November 2009 · Klipeiland Agricultural Butchery, Bronkhorstspruit · Gauteng · Shot
Pieter Woest worked as the manager of the Klipeiland Butchery, a popular rural business situated alongside the R25 road. On that afternoon, Pieter Woest and his wife were working together inside the butchery premises when a farm laborer urgently came inside to alert him that a large group of men was busy breaking into the building adjacent to the shop. Upon hearing the alarm, Pieter Woest grabbed his personal revolver to protect his property and staff, running out into the parking area to confront the intruders. He immediately encountered three of the suspects and opened fire in self-defense, striking one of the robbers twice. However, a fourth member of the gang, who had remained hidden from view behind a concrete pillar in the yard, ambushed him from his blind spot. The hidden assailant fired at close range, shooting Pieter Woest in the back and the calf. The gang, which was later estimated by police investigators to consist of approximately ten heavily armed criminals, systematically targeted the business cashiers and workers. Tokkie Human, a fifty-three-year-old cashier at Klipeiland Butchery, was held at gunpoint during the chaotic assault. When the robbers finally fled the rural property, the traumatized staff rushed to where the manager had collapsed, but Pieter Woest had already sustained catastrophic internal trauma from the gunshot wounds and passed away on the scene before emergency medical personnel could arrive.
