Macdonald Marius
25 October 2008 · Kameeldrift smallholdings, Cullinan · Gauteng · Shot
Marius was a dedicated chemist and a father of two boys who worked tirelessly to provide a stable life for his family. The safety of his rural sanctuary was shattered shortly after midnight when three armed intruders forced their way into the house through a window.
The robbers first encountered Marius’s twelve-year-old son, Gareth, who was asleep in front of the television. The men cold-bloodedly pressed a firearm against the child's head and ordered him to call out to his parents. Responding to their son, Marius and his wife, Leonora, opened their bedroom door only to be instantly ambushed by the gunmen. During the confrontation, the attackers ruthlessly shot Marius in the lower body, inflicting a catastrophic wound. The criminals then proceeded to tightly bind his wife, Leonora, their two sons, and Leonora’s twenty-one-year-old brother, Wiekus Moolman, tying them up right next to where Marius lay. As Marius lay on the floor rapidly losing blood, he desperately begged the gunman who shot him for assistance, but the attackers ignored his pleas entirely. When Leonora frantically tried to move to help stop her husband's bleeding, the robbers threatened to kill her.
The family actually possessed four registered firearms for self-defense, but due to national firearm laws, the weapons were securely locked away in a safe, leaving them completely unable to defend themselves when the ambush occurred. The intruders ransacked the house before fleeing, leaving Marius to tragically bleed to death on the floor right beside his restrained family. Media reports by Beeld newspaper and regional safety networks heavily documented the devastating crime scene, which ignited immense outrage throughout the Kameeldrift farming community.
