The incident transpired around 02:00 AM when a heavily armed criminal gang breached the home security infrastructure and confronted the family in their bedrooms. Chris Bam and his wife Veronica were awoken by intruders standing over their bed, prompting Veronica to scream. Chris Bam immediately pleaded with the gunmen to spare his family and offered to let them take whatever belongings they wanted. The attackers opened fire inside the master bedroom, shooting Chris Bam four times and wounding Veronica. Hearing the gunshots and his mother's screams, 26-year-old Andre Bam rushed out of his bedroom to defend his parents. One of the gunmen was waiting directly outside his door and shot him at point-blank range.Andre Bam died from his gunshot wounds at the scene. Chris Bam survived the initial gunfire and underwent emergency surgery at Netcare Akasia Hospital, but he ultimately died from his severe internal injuries a few weeks later on 20 August 2008. The attackers panicked immediately after discharging their firearms and fled the property empty-handed, meaning absolutely nothing was stolen from the homestead.
