Smit Pieter Willem Adriaan
25 October 2007 · Lunds Poultry Farm,Pietersburg · Limpopo · Shot
Pieter was a hardworking contractor who lived with his young family on the Lunds Poultry Farm, where he managed daily agricultural operations.
At around a quarter past four in the morning, Pieter stepped outside the family home and walked toward the property gate, preparing to leave for his early morning work shift. Out of the darkness, a gang of at least four armed men ambushed him. The attackers aggressively overpowered him at gunpoint and forced him back inside his own house, moving into the kitchen area. There, without mercy or hesitation, the gunmen opened fire, shooting Pieter directly in the heart and killing him instantly.
The horror escalated as the attackers moved further into the residence. Pieter’s twenty-nine-year-old wife, Natasha, who was two months pregnant at the time, was inside the bedroom protecting their three-year-old son, Pieter Junior. Demonstrating immense bravery as the gunmen moved past the room, Natasha opened fire on the intruders to protect her child, wounding at least one of the assailants and forcing the gang to retreat. As the criminals scrambled to escape past the front of the house, Natasha looked out through a window, resulting in a secondary gunfight through the glass during which she was shot in the right leg. The perpetrators fled the scene empty-handed, leaving the household shattered but alive.
