Rautenbach Clive

16 July 2007 · La Terrasse Restaurant and Hotel, Muldersdrift · Gauteng · Shot
The victim of this crime was a businessman and restaurateur named Clive Rautenbach. The incident took place at his hospitality business, which was named La Terrasse Restaurant and Hotel, rather than a standard agricultural farming property. Armed robbers raided the premises in what was later determined by the court to be an "inside job" orchestrated with information from an employee. The attackers confronted his live-in partner, Nicolene Vanessa Da Costa, and forced her to take them to the room where he was resting. The precise way of death was a single fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen/stomach, which was fired while he lay on his bed. Following the shooting, the attackers bound his hands and robbed the property of a vehicle, cash, electronics, and personal belongings. The perpetrators were caught by law enforcement and tried before the Johannesburg High Court. It was revealed during the trial that one of the primary participants, Jerry Jacob Sello Mereko, was a favored long-time employee whom the victim had supported for years. In May 2009, Judge Nigel Willis convicted and sentenced four men—Jerry Jacob Sello Mereko, Elvis Freka Mohlabe, Thabo Wash Moloi (the shooter), and Prosper Shoge—to life imprisonment for the murder. A fifth suspect, Tlou Andries Malete, was acquitted due to an unreliability issue regarding identity parade pointing.
