Following intense tracking, the police successfully arrested the perpetrator, who was identified as 18-year-old Nkosithemba Zanenkosi Ntshaba.The legal proceedings took place in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. During the court appearance, the accused, Nkosithemba Zanenkosi Ntshaba, entered a formal guilty plea to the charges of murder. In his plea explanation, Ntshaba claimed that he had gone to the property to steal because his severe eczema skin condition was causing him distress and he needed money. He further claimed that he shot the farmer because Green had allegedly threatened to set his guard dogs on him, a claim that the widow, Dorothy Green, strongly disputed in her statements to the media.On January 21, 2008, Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Piet Koen handed down the final sentence. The judge found that compelling and substantial circumstances existed to deviate from the statutory maximum of life imprisonment, explicitly citing the suspect's youth and the fact that he had entered an immediate confession. Judge Koen officially convicted Nkosithemba Zanenkosi Ntshaba and sentenced him to 24 years in prison. The victim's sons, David and Mike Green, publicly expressed deep disappointment and anger outside the courtroom regarding the sentence, stating that it failed to serve as an appropriate deterrent for farm murders in the region.
