He was ambushed on his smallholding by a group consisting of at least two attackers on 7 October 2007. During the home invasion, he was severely tortured and beaten by the perpetrators, who proceeded to rob the property. The South African Police Service (SAPS) discovered him at the scene critically injured, and emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital. He succumbed to his extensive trauma and died the following day, 8 October 2007, from his injuries
