During the incident, Martinson was overpowered inside his home and subjected to severe physical trauma before being killed. His body was discovered around 07:00 AM lying on his bed, where his hands and feet had been bound with rope and pantyhose, and a heavy lounge suite chair had been placed on top of him. Law enforcement reports at the time indicated that he had also been struck on the head with a heavy object. Civil tracking databases note a tragic context for the family, as his death occurred only five weeks after his brother, Koos Martinson, was killed in a separate smallholding attack. Following the murder, local police launched a widespread manhunt, which resulted in the arrest of two suspects on 18 September 2005. The suspects, who were originally from Jan Kempdorp and Shaleng, were apprehended by authorities at Mamutla near Taung.
