Age 48. Dr. Pieter Ernst was a 48-year-old medical doctor and philanthropist who was murdered on 29 July 2005 outside his farm near Magaliesburg in the Gauteng province. He was originally from the Netherlands, worked at public healthcare facilities in South Africa, and was widely celebrated for founding Marang House, a non-profit organization that provides a home environment for children suffering from chronic illnesses. The attack occurred while Dr. Ernst was traveling to his farm property to pay his workers, and he was ambushed by armed intruders directly outside the farm premises. He died after being shot dead during the armed robbery assault.
