10 August 2004 · Cullinan smallholding · Gauteng · Shot
Age 62. The incident occurred over the weekend preceding August 12, 2004, when he was ambushed and targeted by armed robbers as he reached the gate. He died from fatal gunshot wounds sustained during the confrontation. When the South African Police Service arrived at the crime scene, they found his Staffordshire terrier keeping a protective, fiercely loyal watch over his master's body, refusing to allow anyone to approach the deceased. The responding authorities eventually had to hand the animal over to the Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals because of its severe distress.
