Venter Rien
30 October 2004 · Leeufontein farm, Cullinan · Gauteng · Shot
On the evening of Saturday, 30 October 2004, 71-year-old dairy farmer Jan Adriaan "At" Venter and his 65-year-old wife, Rien Venter, were shot and killed in their home on the Leeufontein farm near Cullinan, northeast of Pretoria in Gauteng. The couple was already in their pyjamas when the attack occurred. Evidence documented at the scene indicated that the attackers managed to breach the home without triggering immediate suspicion or an alarm. Jan Adriaan Venter was shot in the head, and his body was found lying in the foyer of the house. Rien Venter was shot in the chest, and her body was discovered next to the couple's bed. When the South African Police Service processed the scene on Sunday morning, they discovered a trail of blood, three cartridge casings, and a single fired bullet inside the house. The primary motive for the attack remains ambiguous because nothing was stolen from the property. The couple's vehicles were left untouched in the garage, and their mobile phones were found undisturbed on the kitchen table. At the time of the initial investigation, police spokesperson Inspector Percy Morokane stated that there was no clear motive and no immediate suspects.
