The attack escalated into what police and local media characterized as an "orgy of violence" at the homestead. Kosie van Niekerk, who was partially sighted, was cornered by an armed gang inside a farm storeroom or shed situated about 100 meters away from the residential houses of herself and her son, Johannes. The attackers tied her arms and legs, shot her in the head, stabbed her repeatedly with knives, and slit her throat. Elias Mokoena was targeted in the exact same room, where the perpetrators bound his limbs and smothered or strangled him to death before covering his body beneath iron and a heavy roll of wire. A 50-year-old female domestic worker named Augustine Kgojana was also shot in the stomach during the house breach but managed to survive the ordeal after being hospitalized. Another farm worker hid inside a toilet, while Kosie van Niekerk's daughter-in-law, Annatjie van Niekerk, managed to escape the killers by locking herself inside the farm's tuckshop, where she successfully dialed the police and local farmers for emergency assistance.The South African Police Service (SAPS), led by Constable Christopher Mophiring, responded to the distress call and launched an immediate manhunt in the area. Inquisitive local school children spotted the perpetrators fleeing across the countryside, alerted the police to their exact hideout, and pointed out the specific location where one of the men had discarded the firearm used in the execution. Acting directly on these real-time leads from the children, the police tracked down and arrested five suspects shortly after arriving at the crime scene. Among those apprehended was a 17-year-old youth who was employed as a worker on the farm itself.The state initiated criminal proceedings immediately, and all five accused appeared in the Bethlehem Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, August 25, 2004, facing dual counts of murder alongside charges of attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. The magistrate formally postponed the initial hearing to September 27, 2004, for further forensic investigation, remanding all five individuals in custody without bail.
