Attackers breached his homestead to rob the property, adding to a severe spike in violent rural ambushes recorded in the Limpopo district that year.Martin Armitage died from fatal injuries inflicted during a violent physical assault by the home invaders, who left him dead at the scene before fleeing with his stolen possessions.The history of arrests and convictions in this specific case ended in tragedy and procedural frustration. Shortly after the murder, the South African Police Service arrested a 24-year-old prime suspect named Maano Mutandari in Tshilwavhusiku. Following his arrest, Mutandari made confessions regarding multiple local crimes and was being escorted by three police officers to point out the various crime scenes. While in transit, the suspect suddenly lunged forward, grabbed the steering wheel of the moving police vehicle, and caused it to crash and overturn under a bridge between Ramantsha and Ravele. Mutandari then managed to scramble out of the wreckage, seize a police service pistol, and shoot and kill one of the escorting police officers before he was fatally shot. Because the prime suspect died during this violent escape attempt, the case never proceeded to trial, resulting in no formal court convictions.
