30 July 2003 · Farm Vadersdeel, Heilbron · Free State · Shot
The double murder took place on July 30, 2003, on the farm Vadersdeel, located in the northern Free State province. During the targeted farm invasion, the couple was overpowered, violently assaulted, and shot dead inside their residence. Following the execution, the attackers loaded the bodies into the couple's own station wagon and drove the vehicle to a deserted rural road in the Heilbron area. The perpetrators then set the automobile on fire, burning both victims beyond recognition. The police forces, with assistance from the Welkom serious violent crime unit, successfully tracked down and arrested two suspects shortly after the bodies were discovered. The perpetrators were identified as Samuel Tsotsetsi, a 22-year-old herdsman who was employed on the farm, and his 23-year-old cousin, Meshack Tsotsetsi. Both individuals faced formal prosecution in the Kroonstad High Court, where they were convicted in 2005 for the double murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Judge G.F. Wright sentenced each perpetrator to 35 years in prison, which comprised 25 years for the murders and an additional 15 years for the aggravated robbery charges.
