Herbst Stanley "Stan"

Age 53. , 40-year-old farm manager Stanley Herbst (commonly known as Stan Herbst) was killed during a violent home invasion. The targeted assault took place at the residential homestead of Farm Balla, situated in the rural terrain near Pilgrim's Rest in the Mpumalanga province.The confrontation unfolded shortly after Stanley Herbst and his wife, Susan Herbst (also referenced as Sue Herbst), returned home to the farmhouse from a hunting trip. Susan Herbst opened a bathroom window to let fresh air into the house, inadvertently providing a point of entry for an armed intruder who had been lurking on the property. While the couple was subsequently in their bedroom drinking tea and listening to the radio, they heard an unusual noise coming from the direction of the bathroom. Stanley Herbst immediately leapt from the bed to defend his wife and investigate the disturbance. An intruder armed with a 9mm pistol appeared at the bedroom door and opened fire, shooting Stanley Herbst at close range. Despite sustaining critical wounds, Stanley Herbst and his wife fought back. Susan Herbst managed to grab a .38 Special revolver and fired repeatedly at the assailant, hitting him in the stomach. The wounded intruder attempted to flee back out through the bathroom window, but Susan Herbst fired again, striking him in the back. The perpetrator managed to run a few additional steps toward the garden gate before collapsing and dying on the scene. Stanley Herbst succumbed to his gunshot wounds inside the house before emergency medical rescue teams and local police arrived. Susan Herbst escaped physical injury from the gunfire.Following the shootout, responding Mpumalanga police officers discovered a cellphone on the deceased intruder's body. Police spokesperson Captain Mary Gama confirmed that authorities dialed the last number listed in the phone's call history, connecting them to a local resident who agreed to identify the body at the Pilgrim's Rest police station. The contact confirmed that the deceased suspect had been lodging at his house, identifying him only by the first name Isaac, originally from the Mahushu area near Hazyview. Police ballistics and forensic teams recovered both firearms used during the shootout at the scene
