De Jager Pieter Wouter "Piet"

27 September 2003 · Farm Laatsgevonden, Levubu · Limpopo · Shot
Age 69. The victim walked out of his house at approximately 11:00 on Saturday, September 27, 2003, to switch off an electrical water pump located about 400 meters from his home. He was ambushed and fired upon by a group of five armed attackers. Despite being mortally wounded, he managed to stumble back toward the house while shouting a warning to his wife, Lenie, to lock herself and their two visiting grandchildren inside the security gate. The attackers chased him to the house, pushing and pulling at the security gate, but were unable to gain entry and fled the scene without stealing anything, leaving the victim's watch, credit cards, and pockets untouched. Gunshot wounds to the head and chest. Bethuel Mulaudzi was arrested along with four co-accused suspects. On May 13, 2005, in the circuit court sitting at Makhado, Bethuel Mulaudzi was convicted of the murder of Piet de Jager and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. He was also sentenced to an additional 10 years imprisonment for an unrelated armed robbery and assault against another local resident, Johan de Wilde, bringing his total effective sentence to 30 years. The charges against the four co-accused were initially dropped during the trial due to a lack of evidence, though the presiding judge ordered further investigation into their involvement.
