Their neighbor discovered them missing after failing to get in touch. Their daughter found their home completely frozen in time with half-finished plates and glasses of fruit juice left on the kitchen table, while their Land Rover and highly distressed dogs remained outside. Shortly after their disappearance, their children began receiving WhatsApp messages written in Zulu demanding a R2 million (£85,000) ransom to be paid into Gillian's bank account. The couple was murdered through an exceptionally gruesome muti-harvesting ritual. According to chilling confessions detailed by Detective Warrant Officer Johannes de Lange during later court affidavits, an armed gang ambushed the elderly couple at their home, abducted them, and took them to an off-site residence. When the ransom was not paid, the attackers cut off their ears and limbs while they were alive or newly deceased, before selling their body parts to a traditional healer/witch doctor in Johannesburg for R50,000. Their remains were then completely disposed of near a body of running water, and to this day, their bodies have never been physically recovered. The status of arrests and convictions has been a source of extreme frustration and controversy. Initially, South African Police Service (SAPS) units arrested two farm laborers—including a former gardener who was found at a church in possession of a firearm and Gillian Dinnis's stolen phone SIM card. One of the primary suspects, 22-year-old Lungelo Mkhize, gave a detailed confession outlining the muti killings. However, during his bail hearing at the Mooi River Magistrate's Court, Mkhize claimed his confession was beaten out of him by detectives. The magistrate subsequently ruled the confession unreliable and withdrew the charges, releasing the suspects due to a lack of physical evidence or alternative fingerprints from the house. There are currently no convictions, and no suspects are in custody, leading the family to publicly accuse the local police of a massive cover-up and structural mishandling of the case.
