Brits, who lived with a mental disability, was targeted inside his residential home on Valley Farm alongside his sixty-five-year-old mother, Anna-Marie (Annemarie) Botha. While details surrounding the exact initial confrontation remain scarce, the attackers launched an exceptionally violent onslaught against the family. Brits was slain inside the house, and his mother was brutally stabbed over thirty times, with forensic scene evidence showing she put up a fierce struggle to defend them. Her husband and Ruan's stepfather, Faan Botha, discovered their bodies later that evening upon returning home from an outing. The perpetrators ransacked the residence, stole personal items, and then fled the property.
