Turner Karen
17 September 2019 · Hluleka Nature Reserve on the Wild Coast · Eastern Cape · Stabbed
Karen Turner was 31/33 years old (contemporary reports differ) and was murdered on 17 September 2019 at Hluleka Nature Reserve on the Wild Coast, Eastern Cape, while on holiday with her husband Matthew Turner and their 23-month-old son. She was a primary-school teacher from Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, and was about three months pregnant.
The couple were asleep in their chalet at about 3 a.m. when two intruders attacked them. Karen was fatally attacked while her husband was also seriously injured. He later told her brother that he remembered two men attacking them. Their toddler was unharmed.
Karen had celebrated her birthday the day before the attack. Her brother Ian Crouch said the family had been staying at Hluleka because they were attending a wedding. Karen and Matthew were themselves Underberg farmers, and they had recently moved into their newly renovated main farmhouse.
Police investigated the murder and initially said that a suspect had been identified and that an arrest was expected. However, by 27 September 2019, police were still reporting that no arrests had been made.
