✝
Ludwig Norman
5 October 2018 · Farm Valleisig, Joubertina · Eastern Cape · Beaten
The perpetrators confronted Norman Ludwig near his home, executing a severe physical assault. According to statements released by the South African Police Service spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli, the attackers struck the victim over the head multiple times with a hard, blunt object, inflicting fatal trauma. The murder weapon was not recovered at the scene of the crime. The assailants then ransacked the interior of the house, though a subsequent assessment by the family and detectives indicated that the primary item stolen during the farm invasion was cash. Norman Ludwig's lifeless body was discovered later that morning at approximately 09:30 by a family friend, lying outside the residence adjacent to the kitchen door.
The initial criminal investigation yielded a breakthrough a week after the murder. On Friday, October 12, 2018, a specialized team of SAPS detectives apprehended a 22-year-old suspect named Jason Witbooi in the nearby settlement of Louterwater, Joubertina. He made a brief appearance in the Joubertina Magistrate's Court on October 15, 2018, where he was formally charged with murder and remanded in custody without bail. The legal proceedings faced dramatic complications on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, when Jason Witbooi, while being transported as an awaiting-trial prisoner from the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court back to prison, managed to escape from the back of a moving police vehicle alongside a fellow inmate named Mbongosi Mgoqi near the Kareedouw and Humansdorp turn-off on the R62 and N2 on-ramp. The regional police force launched an immediate manhunt, which concluded successfully on Saturday, April 6, 2019, when an alert motorist recognized the fugitives hitchhiking on the N2 highway in the Storms River area and alerted the authorities, leading to their immediate re-arrest by the Storms River SAPS.
