Regarding what happened and how he died, two men arrived at the lodge property after 22:00 under the pretext of requesting a room for the night. After gaining access to the premises, the men ambushed Arno Niehaus inside his dwelling. The exact progression of the subsequent struggle remains unrecorded, but his son discovered his half-naked body on the floor of the residence the following morning, Sunday, August 20, 2017, at approximately 11:00. A South African Police Service spokesperson confirmed that the victim's body exhibited extensive bruising. There were also clear, visible injuries and marks concentrated around his neck, indicating that the attackers had robustly throttled and suffocated him to death.
