19 April 2016 · Farm Swart Umfolozi, Vryheid · KwaZulu-Natal · Shot
A heavily armed gang consisting of seven attackers launched a coordinated, ambush-style assault against the homestead. The perpetrators stormed the property and immediately opened fire on the family. Billy van Rooyen was shot multiple times and died instantly at the scene. His father-in-law, Ronnie Lombard, was critically wounded during the initial gunbattle and was rushed to a local hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his gunshot injuries. Billy's 76-year-old father, Lodewyk van Rooyen, was also shot and wounded during the gunfight but survived the ordeal. Billy’s mother, Karlien van Rooyen Snr. (who shared the same first name as Billy's grieving wife, Karlien van Rooyen), was present but escaped physical injury. The attackers ransacked the home, bound and kidnapped employees or family members during the robbery, stole an undisclosed sum of cash, and fled the scene.Law enforcement authorities from the South African Police Service launched a massive tactical investigation, ultimately tracking down and enacting a total of nine arrests over the subsequent months. The legal proceedings were divided across multiple trials in the Madadeni High Court. One of the perpetrators, Thulani Hlonipani Sibiya, chose to plead guilty early in the process. On November 1, 2017, Madadeni High Court Judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati sentenced Sibiya to two life terms for the murders, plus an additional 40 years for armed robbery, attempted murder, and kidnapping. The remaining six main trial co-accused maintained pleas of innocence, causing the trial to span three years. On July 12, 2019, High Court Judge Jan Barnard found all six guilty. On July 15, 2019, the court handed down double life sentences to all six men. The sentenced individuals were identified as Msizeni Joseph Shezi (35), Lindokuhle Zulu (35), Gcinimali Dladla (40), Themba Mhlanga (28), Mondli Nkosi, and Mngcineni Gazu (29). They received life imprisonment for each count of murder, 15 years for armed robbery, 10 years for the attempted murder of Lodewyk van Rooyen, and 5 years for kidnapping, running concurrently with their life sentences
