Naicker Balasindrum

12 October 2002 · Evans Crescent farm,Tongaat · KwaZulu-Natal · Shot
Around 4:30 AM on that Saturday morning, Balasindrum's forty-four-year-old wife, Padmini Naicker, walked out of the main farmhouse to retrieve an apron from the outdoor washing line. While outside, she was suddenly accosted and cornered by three armed men lurking in the darkness. Hearing his wife's desperate screams for help, Balasindrum Naicker and his twenty-two-year-old son, Raishen Naicker, immediately rushed out of the homestead to defend her. The three attackers instantly opened fire on both men as they emerged. Balasindrum Naicker was shot directly in the chest and tragically died at the scene from his wounds, while his son Raishen was shot in the right thigh but survived the gunfire. The three assailants then fled the sugarcane plantation on foot into the surrounding terrain without stealing any household assets or personal belongings, leaving the localized shooting logged by police networks as a violent, unprovoked farm ambush.
