Ruck Cornelia Johanna Henderika Frederika
10 October 1995 · Smallholding, Walkerville · Gauteng · Strangled
On the night of October 10, 1995, a brutal crime marked the beginning of a criminal gang's violent reign of terror across the smallholdings and farms in the De Deur and Walkerville areas near Vereeniging in Gauteng, South Africa. The primary victim of this specific attack was fifty-two-year-old Cornelia Johanna Henderika Frederika Ruck. She and her husband, David Ruck, were at their home in Walkerville when an armed gang managed to breach their security and overpower them. During the harrowing home invasion, the attackers subjected Cornelia Ruck to a horrific assault, gang-raping her before strangling her to death. The perpetrators then tied up her husband, David Ruck, leaving him helpless while they ransacked the house. They robbed the couple of their motor vehicle, a trailer, and a substantial quantity of household goods and expensive electronics before fleeing the scene.
Following this initial attack, the gang continued their violent crime spree across the region over the subsequent weeks and months. A week later, they assaulted a group of seven people at a home and shop in Sweetwaters, committing ten counts of rape against one woman. In December 1995, they struck another home in Sweetwaters, raping a minor girl three times and stealing another vehicle and a firearm. The very next night, near Grasmere, they shot and killed a man named Bekikie Malevu to steal his firearm, with their crime wave stretching well into March 1996. The perpetrators responsible for these atrocities were eventually apprehended by the South African Police Service, leading to formal criminal charges, a trial, and subsequent convictions as verified in official High Court records.
