De Villiers Andre Maasdorp

17 August 1992 · Farm Athelstone, Port Elizabeth · Eastern Cape · Shot
. He was 42 years old at the time and was ambushed and gunned down by a group of men as he parked his vehicle at his home. His family members, specifically Elizabeth Brenda de Villiers and Louis Andre de Villiers, were present during the incident, faced attempted murder and attempted robbery, but managed to escape the gunfire without physical injury. The case carried heavy political undertones because Andre de Villiers had been an informant who was actively supplying information to the African National Congress and media outlets regarding the clandestine apartheid security force unit known as the Hammer Unit. He was set to provide key evidence linking state counterinsurgency elements to the notorious 1985 assassination of anti-apartheid activist Matthew Goniwe and the rest of the Cradock Four. This timing initially led to widespread suspicion that he was assassinated by an apartheid state hit squad to prevent his testimony. However, the legal outcomes and subsequent investigations revealed a different reality. In April 1993, the state convicted a member of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the African National Congress, along with another accomplice for the murder. Years later, two operatives named Thamsanqa Oliver Mali and Lindile Joni Stemela formally applied for political amnesty for the killing, attempted murders, and attempted robbery under Section 18 of the Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission Amnesty Committee granted amnesty to Thamsanqa Oliver Mali but officially refused amnesty to Lindile Joni Stemela after determining that Stemela's motivation for participating in the farmhouse attack was not genuinely political but was driven purely by personal pecuniary interest and standard criminal intent to rob the property.
