On December twenty-second, nineteen ninety-one, a devastating multi-generational family murder occurred at the Grootstry farm near Verkeerdevlei in the Free State, claiming the lives of four family members and leaving a teenage girl as the sole survivor. The primary perpetrator, Diphaphang Gabriel Mahakoe, was a former employee at the Engelbrecht farm who had been dismissed roughly two weeks prior to the incident. Seeking retaliation and financial gain, Mahakoe partnered with an accomplice known as Letlake to execute a targeted robbery. On that Sunday evening, the two men breached the farm property and forced their way inside the homestead, catching the family completely off guard. Inside the home, the attackers systematically overpowered the elderly farm owners, their visiting daughter, and two young granddaughters, moving them all into the main bedroom. Willem "Willie" Engelbrecht and his wife, Elizabeth "Bettie" Engelbrecht, were tied up and brutally attacked, suffering fatal injuries at the hands of the intruders. Their visiting daughter, Magdalena "Lena" Smit, was also incapacitated and killed alongside her parents, while her eleven-year-old daughter, Michelle Smit, was tragically murdered during the onslaught. Her fourteen-year-old daughter, Liselle Smit, was severely assaulted, strangled until she lost consciousness, and left for dead on the floor among her deceased family members. After looting the house for cash, firearms, and valuables, the attackers fled the scene. Hours later, Liselle Smit regained consciousness and, despite her severe injuries and the profound trauma of discovering her sister, mother, and grandparents dead, managed to free herself to seek help. Her survival and subsequent eyewitness testimony became the foundational cornerstone of the entire police investigation. Following a swift investigation by the South African Police, Diphaphang Gabriel Mahakoe was apprehended and brought to trial, where he was convicted on four counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and charges of housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances. He appealed his convictions and sentence, but the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa formally dismissed his case on June one, nineteen ninety-three, upholding his severe sentences for the mass murder.
