Nicholson Paul Bertram

On 27 August 1991, Mbhekiseni Mduduzi Dlamini encountered 76-year-old Paul Bertram Nicholson on Breakfast Hill Farm near Underberg and asked him for work. Nicholson told him that he had no work available. Dlamini then asked him for money, but Nicholson refused and returned to his house. Dlamini followed him, entered the house through an open window and hid behind the kitchen door. When Nicholson later entered the kitchen, Dlamini confronted him and a struggle followed. Dlamini attacked Nicholson, causing his death. He then encountered Nicholson’s 73-year-old wife, Anna Margaretha Nicholson, in the passage. She was injured during the attack and was forced to hand over money. Dlamini took approximately R540 in total, including money obtained from the house office and pantry, before leaving. He was subsequently convicted of Nicholson’s murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances and received life imprisonment for the murder and a further six years for the robbery.
