The couple was confronted and overpowered by an intruder in their own home. Both were brutally murdered inside the house. After the murder, the attacker removed the clothes from Mrs. Naudé's body. He then carried both of their bodies to Mr. Naudé's bakkie in an attempt to hide them or drive away. The police quickly tracked down and arrested the culprit, Mr. Mofokeng, after the bakkie and the bodies were found. Due to its severity and brutality, the case was tried before the Supreme Court, where Mofokeng was found guilty on both counts of murder. The murderer appealed his sentence to the highest court in the country. In the historic judgment of the Appellate Division (today the Supreme Court of Appeal) in the case of S v Mofokeng on 14 September 1992, his appeal was dismissed and his heavy sentences were upheld. He received the death penalty, but after the abolition of the death penalty, his sentence was changed to life imprisonment. This was a multiple murder in which he died alongside his 44-year-old wife, Aletta Cicelia Naude (born Durand). Both victims were attacked and stabbed, with the official medical cause of death for David Stefanus Naude explicitly recorded as puncture wounds in the chest resulting in severe blood loss and a collapsed lung.
