Naude Frederika Martha Johanna "Rika"
23 March 1991 · Farm Leeuwpoort, Fochville · North West · Stabbed
Mr Willem Nicholas "Willie" Naude (70), and his wife, Frederika Martha Johanna "Rika" Naude (69), were found, covered in blood from multiple stab wounds and still in their nightwear, in the farmhouse on the farm Leeuwpoort in Fochville district.A neighbour, a Mrs Oosthuizen, found Mrs Naude in the passage and Mr Naude in one of the bedrooms when she went to the house about 7.15 am on Saturday to buy milk. Both were already dead and had been stabbed repeatedly in the neck and chest, apparently with a knife.A Western Transvaal police spokesman said a 26-year-old Black man was arrested at 9 pm on Saturday in connection with the murders. There were signs of a fierce struggle, indicating that the burly Mr Naude and his wife had fought desperately for their lives after their attacker or attackers entered the house through the back door, which was opened early on Saturday mornings for milk sales.Police believe the motive for the double murder was robbery, but were not able yesterday to say what items were missing. The spokesman also declined to comment on whether any items were recovered after the arrest of the suspect. The couple had a general dealer store across the road from their home and also kept a few milk cows. The house, although near the road, is concealed from it by thick foliage. There is no burglar proofing on any of the windows, but the Naudes had a large number of dogs.Mr Naude's daughter, Mrs Herculine van der Merwe, said her father and stepmother had lived on the farm for many years."It has belonged to our family for generations and was inherited by my father from his father."He would not leave it. I asked him several times to move for his and my stepmother's safety, but he loved the farm and would not leave."Mrs Van der Merwe and her husband, Frik, were to have visited the farm yesterday.Mrs Van der Merwe last saw her father and stepmother a week ago and was given the news on Saturday morning when the police phoned her.The couple leaves three grandchildren, Retha (22), Marleen (18) and Frikkie (15).
