Bruller August Heinrich Karl

12 October 2002 · Somerset Farm, Elandskraal, Dundee · KwaZulu-Natal · Stabbed
On that Friday, two young men approached the homestead under a false pretense, politely requesting to use the manager’s telephone. August Bruller opened his door to assist them, but as soon as they gained entry, the intruders launched a sudden, vicious assault. The attackers stabbed him in the neck, killing him instantly at the scene. The killers then ransacked the property, though investigators noted the minor nature of the theft, reporting that they fled the farm after robbing him of merely cigarettes and bubblegum. August Bruller's body was discovered the following day, Saturday, October 12, 2002, when a welfare check was conducted at the Somerset Farm residence. Following the grim discovery, detectives from the Newcastle Murder and Robbery Unit launched a rapid tactical investigation coordinated by Police Superintendent Vish Naidoo. Within hours of uncovering the crime scene, swift police tracking led to the formal arrest of two male suspects, aged twenty-two and twenty-three. The two arrested individuals were detained in custody and formally indicted on charges of murder and house robbery with aggravating circumstances. They made their initial legal appearance before the judicial bench in the Dundee Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, October 15, 2002, where the state opposed bail due to the severe nature of the agricultural attack.
