Sithembile Khumalo

21 September 2002 · Mankenshaneni Reserve, Undumbili · KwaZulu-Natal · Shot
On September 21, 2002, an extreme act of violence occurred at the Mankenshaneni Reserve in the Sundumbili (Undumbili) area near Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal. The tragedy was not a standard double murder, but rather a brutal family massacre that claimed multiple lives on the property on the exact same day.The attack took place at a rural homestead within the reserve, where armed perpetrators executed a coordinated assault against the family residing there. During the mass killing, eight-year-old Vuyani Gwala, five-year-old Nokwanda Gwala, and six-year-old Nombulelo Gwala were killed alongside fourteen-year-old Sithembile Khumalo. The adult members of the household, sixty-seven-year-old Dolly Manqele and forty-year-old Mkhanyifeleni Manqele, were also killed during the onslaught. The physical cause of death for the children and adults remains restricted within historical state archives, but the sheer scale of the coordinated home invasion completely devastated the local community.
