The ambush was carried out inside his home by an acquaintance he had met two days prior at a local bar called "the Bell". During the confrontation, the attacker caught him off guard, overpowered him, and slit his throat. The perpetrator then wrapped his bloodied body inside a household carpet, covered it with a duvet, and left it on the cottage floor. The attacker ransacked the residence, stealing various household appliances and items—including a television set, a microwave, a cellphone, a CD player, and a garden gazebo—before fleeing the smallholding. His body was discovered inside the cottage later that Friday.A swift forensic investigation led to a rapid arrest. The South African Police Service apprehended Gareth Davies, a 31-year-old technician and former soldier, the very next day on Saturday, August 17, 2002, after tracking the stolen items. He appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate's Court the following Monday.
