During the violent farm invasion, a group of armed perpetrators breached the property and targeted the family. The direct cause of his death was trauma from being beaten to death by the perpetrators at the scene. His 49-year-old wife, Martie Olivier, was also trapped inside the homestead during the raid. The perpetrators turned on her and subjected her to a severe physical assault, leaving her with significant injuries across her body. She managed to survive the violent onslaught while the attackers plundered the farmhouse for transportable valuables and fled the property. The crime scene was subsequently discovered by a neighbor who came onto the property and located the deceased farmer and his injured wife.
