21 April 2010 · Rooidak Farm, Villiersdorp · Western Cape · Stabbed
(frequently cited as Rooidak Farm in regional summaries) in the Vyeboom agricultural valley near Villiersdorp in the Western Cape. The horrifying tragedy transpired early on a Monday morning when the young teenager said goodbye to her long-term guardian, Liesbeth Ambros, and walked out through the farm's orchards to catch her routine bus to school. Moments after her departure, her caretakers heard agonizing, animal-like screams echoing from the orchard. Her guardian's husband rushed outside to investigate the source of the screams and discovered a man pinning the young girl down and violently assaulting her. The attacker inflicted fatal, deep stab wounds across her body before fleeing into the surrounding farmlands.Following the discovery of the murder, a massive police manhunt was immediately launched across the Vyeboom and Grabouw farming sectors. Police spokesperson Sylvester de Long quickly issued an official warrant for the primary suspect, a twenty-four-year-old local laborer named Aaron Setona, who was known by the alias "Papie" and had been dismissed from his employment on that very same farm just three days prior to the attack. Through swift community mobilization and active coordination between local farmworkers and commercial farmers, law enforcement tracked the fugitive's escape route hundreds of kilometers away. Within days of the homicide, members of the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad tracked down and arrested Aaron Setona in Joubertina in the Eastern Cape. He was transported back to the Western Cape to face formal prosecution in the Caledon Magistrate's Court for murder and rape.
