The couple was returning home from a local church function at approximately 23:00 when they encountered an unknown number of armed intruders who were in the process of loading stolen household goods from the home into a getaway vehicle. Upon being surprised by the couple's arrival, the gunmen immediately opened fire without warning.Fanie Stols was shot in the chest and Thelma Stols was shot in the back, causing both victims to die instantly from gunshot wounds at the scene. Following the execution, the perpetrators stole the couple's personal vehicle, an Opel Astra, to escape the property. White River police investigators processing the crime scene recovered spent cartridges matching a .303 rifle.
