Bronkhorst Christiaan Pieter "Chris"
29 September 2010 · Walkerville smallholding, Johannesburg · Gauteng · Tortured
On the morning of Wednesday, September 29, 2010, sixty-seven-year-old partially disabled stroke survivor Christiaan Pieter "Chris" Bronkhorst was subjected to an exceptionally cruel home invasion and torture at his property, a residential smallholding located in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng. Four young men breached the smallholding homestead during the daytime and ambushed the elderly pensioner, who was physically weak and completely unable to defend himself. The attackers repeatedly whipped and lashed him with a sjambok and a rubber whip. To extract information regarding valuables or cash, the assailants tortured him by dripping melting plastic onto his skin, inflicting horrific burns and trauma across his body. The South African Police Service initially delayed verifying the crime to the national media, confirming the attack only four days later on November 2, 2010, following intense pressure from the victim's family and the local community. Following the initial onslaught, Chris Bronkhorst was rushed to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, where he spent an extended period under intensive care for severe bodily shock and systemic trauma. Though his primary outer burn wounds eventually closed, the extreme physiological shock caused permanent medical deterioration. He was subsequently moved to a public care facility, where friends and family documented a prolonged period of severe suffering and physical decline.Chris Bronkhorst passed away eight months later on Sunday, April 24, 2011, directly succumbing to long-term health complications arising from the violent assault.
