✝
Rowe Alan
13 May 2009 · Bloemendal Farm, Rietvlei · KwaZulu-Natal · Shot
the attack was a planned robbery orchestrated with the assistance of a former employee. A gang of armed men traveled from Durban and Maphumulo, arriving in the area to target the farm. On the evening of May 13, 2009, the perpetrators hid in the bushes near the entrance gates to the farm property and waited for Rowe to arrive. Rowe was driving home alone in his white Mazda Drifter bakkie after visiting a neighboring farmer. As he pulled up to the property and stepped out of his vehicle to open the gate, one of the hidden attackers stepped on leaves, making a noise that alerted Rowe. Rowe immediately attempted to climb back into his utility vehicle and reverse away to escape, turning on his headlights. The attackers opened fire on the vehicle using multiple firearms, including an R5 rifle. Rowe was shot twice in his upper body. During the chaotic gunfire, Rowe physically grabbed one of the intruders who had approached him, prompting the attacker to cry out and fire three additional close-range shots to overcome him. Rowe died outside his vehicle next to the farm shed from the inflicted gunshot wounds. The attackers panicked following the heavy gunfire and fled the scene on foot back to their getaway bakkie parked a kilometer away without successfully robbing the property.
