Potgieter Jan

21 October 2009 · Farm Johannesberg, Marken · Limpopo · Shot
On Wednesday afternoon, October 21, 2009, sixty-five-year-old farm caretaker Jan Potgieter was on duty at the Johannesberg farm, located in the Villa Nora holiday cottages area near Marken in the Waterberg District of Limpopo. Around 13:00, a violent attack unfolded in broad daylight when a gardener working on the property turned on the family. The attacker initially targeted Jan Potgieter's daughter, Anneliese, and her two young children, physically forcing them into a rondawel cottage and locking them inside the bathroom while demanding a cash ransom. Jan Potgieter confronted the assailant to protect his family during the unfolding crisis. During the confrontation, the attacker shot Jan Potgieter inside the home, inflicting fatal gunshot wounds that killed him at the scene. Following the shooting, the local farm-watch community and neighboring farmers mobilized rapidly to secure the area. Their immediate response led to the swift tracking and rounding up of the attacker before he could escape the property or cause further harm to the surviving family members locked in the cottage
