Bellville South police officers on a routine patrol early on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, pulled over a suspicious grey Mercedes-Benz Kompressor. When the three occupants could not prove ownership of the vehicle, the police traced the car registration to Robin McGregor and dispatched local Tulbagh officers to check on his property. Upon arrival, the police found the house locked but discovered his body inside the premises. The house had been ransacked, and two household safes were missing. He died from multiple stab wounds inflicted during the robbery. He had moved to the Tulbagh home the previous year following the death of his wife.Law enforcement initially arrested three individuals. Two suspects, Cecil Thomas and Llewellyn Thobias, were formally charged in the Tulbagh Magistrate's Court with murder, theft, and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The legal proceedings escalated to the Cape High Court, where Cecil Thomas was found guilty. On November 22, 2010, Cape High Court Judge Nathan Erasmus sentenced Cecil Thomas to an effective 30 years in prison, which comprised a 25-year sentence for murder and a 15-year sentence for robbery, with 10 years of the robbery sentence ordered to run concurrently.
