Steyn Barend
25 October 2010 · Bloemspruit smallholdings, Bloemfontein · Free State · Hacked/Axed
Age 73. The tragic account of seventy-three-year-old Barend Steyn, known to his loved ones as Ben, unfolds on a quiet smallholding located at 23 Dennelaan in the Bloemspruit area just outside Bloemfontein. On Friday, November 5, 2010, a routine family visit turned into an absolute nightmare when his son, Callie Steyn, arrived at the property shortly before six o'clock in the evening. Usually, Ben would walk outside to warmly greet his family the moment they pulled up, but on this specific afternoon, the homestead remained eerily silent. Sensing that something was terribly wrong, Callie went inside to search for his father, navigating the rooms until he made a horrific discovery in the second bedroom.
Inside the bedroom, Ben lay lifeless on the ground. His attackers had bound his hands securely and wrapped a piece of cloth tightly around his head and face. The scene bore silent, gruesome testimony to a prolonged and merciless ordeal, marked by a blood-stained sock, a pillowcase, and a discarded rag. Next to his body, investigators discovered a heavy pickaxe handle and a clothing iron that was still plugged into the wall, indicating that the elderly smallholder had been brutally beaten and tortured before succumbing to his severe injuries.
The local community was paralyzed with fear following the incident, as neighboring residents expressed deep frustrations over rising rural crime and poor police response times in the Bloemspruit sector. South African Police Service Organised Crime units immediately launched an intensive investigation into the home invasion. Within days of the discovery, on Sunday, November 7, 2010, tracking teams successfully cornered and arrested a suspect found hiding in the immediate vicinity of the smallholdings.
