Bartel Roger

23 October 1997 · Pendale Smallholding, Daleside · Gauteng · Stabbed
Age 71. The victim of this brutal attack was seventy-one-year-old landholder Roger Bartel, a senior member of the local farming community who lived on his property just on the outskirts of the town. He resided on the Pendale smallholding, a peaceful agricultural plot located outside Daleside where he spent his later years managing his land. Sometime during that Thursday, an aggressive home invasion took place when attackers breached the boundary walls and security of his homestead. Roger Bartel was caught completely by surprise and confronted by the intruders within his own property. In a sudden explosion of violence, the perpetrators targeted the elderly man, brutally stabbing him to death before fleeing into the surrounding area. The attack shocked the local smallholders and became part of a highly troubled year for rural security in the province, during which fifteen people lost their lives in similar smallholding invasions across Gauteng.
