Boland law enforcement officials reconstructed the crime after a routine traffic stop. Police officers from Stellenbosch and Cloetesville pulled over a vehicle driving along the Helshoogte Pass because the driver appeared to be under the influence of liquor. While questioning the two occupants, the police discovered a jacket left by the side of the road, which prompted them to launch a localized search of the area using a police tracking dog. The tracking dog led handlers to a nearby location where they discovered Hanekom's body alongside a knife. The medical cause of death was determined to be multiple stab wounds.Law enforcement authorities immediately enacted three arrests following the discovery. The two occupants inside the intercepted vehicle on the Helshoogte Pass were detained on the scene, and a third male suspect was tracked down and arrested shortly thereafter at a residential house in Stellenbosch.
