The attackers targeted the elderly woman and her husband, subjecting them to a violent physical assault while demanding access to cash and household valuables. During the confrontation, the intruders shot and killed Madelein van den Berg at the scene, while her husband survived the attack with severe injuries. The attackers then looted the residence, stealing appliances, electronic items, and a vehicle to flee the area. In terms of additional information including arrests and convictions, local law enforcement tracked down and apprehended the perpetrators responsible for the raid. The suspects, including a man named Mphanyana Given Kanyane, were brought to trial before the Pretoria High Court. In June 2014, the court found the perpetrators guilty of murder, attempted murder, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. The criminals were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Madelein van den Berg, alongside an additional 41 years in prison for the attempted murder of her husband and the accompanying aggravated robbery charges.
