✝
Lotterie Wilhelm
24 August 2009 · Smallholding Doornfontein, Pretoria · Gauteng · Beaten
Age 65. The incident unfolded when a five-man criminal gang deliberately set fire to a field across from the family's homestead to lure the residents outside. While Wilhelm Lotterie's sons, Piet and Neels, left the house to go and douse the flames, the perpetrators breached the home. Inside, they ambushed Wilhelm Lotterie, stripped him, tied him up, beat him brutally with the butt of a firearm, and repeatedly kicked him as he lay on the ground. When his sons returned to the house after fighting the fire, the robbers ambushed them as well, binding the brothers separately in the toilet and the bathroom. Wilhelm Lotterie succumbed to his injuries at the scene, with responding emergency paramedics and police representative Captain Shimi Sepato confirming that he had suffered fatal suffocation as a result of the assault. Wilhelm's 23-year-old daughter-in-law, Jessica, and her newborn baby were also caught in the homestead during the crisis but managed to flee down the road in a severe state of shock to alert a neighbor, Jan Vermaak, who launched an immediate local community patrol. The attackers ultimately fled the smallholding with stolen money, household electrical appliances, cellular phones, meat cleared out from the freezer, and the family's silver-colored Ford Fiesta hatchback bearing the registration plate WHF 052 GP.
