Age 65. The incident unfolded when a five-man criminal gang deliberately set fire to a field across from the family's homestead to lure the residents outside. While Wilhelm Lotterie's sons, Piet and Neels, left the house to go and douse the flames, the perpetrators breached the home. Inside, they ambushed Wilhelm Lotterie, stripped him, tied him up, beat him brutally with the butt of a firearm, and repeatedly kicked him as he lay on the ground.
