Smit Christo

29 July 2009 · Elandsfontein Small holdings, Pretoria · Gauteng · Shot
Age 42. Four armed men ambushed Christo Smit and his forty-six-year-old partner, Flip Nel, blindly gunning them down just as they left their homestead to go to work in the morning. Christo Smit was shot in the stomach during the ambush. An employer found both men badly injured after hearing the gunshots. A neighbour named John Foulds rushed to the scene to assist and comfort the men while waiting approximately two hours for the police and an air-ambulance to arrive. Christo Smit was transported to the hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his gunshot injuries. Flip Nel survived the shooting, but the bullet remained lodged in his spine, leaving him wheelchair-bound.
