Smit Eugene

19 October 2015 · Roodeplaat Dam, Pretoria · Gauteng · Shot
Eugene Smit was a fifty-one-year-old father of four children from the north of Pretoria who lost his life following a brutal resort robbery in Gauteng. The terrifying armed ambush unfolded late on Sunday evening, October 4, 2015, and he tragically succumbed to his catastrophic internal injuries after a two-week battle for survival on Monday afternoon, October 19, 2015. The nightmare began during what was supposed to be a peaceful family fishing weekend. Eugene and his wife, Charmaine Smit, had driven out to the resort accompanied by their children and a group of close friends to spend a few days angling. The group had been fishing late into Saturday night before Eugene eventually retired to bed inside their wooden holiday cabin to sleep next to the couple's three-year-old daughter, while Charmaine and Eugene's two sons continued angling along the water's edge. On Sunday evening, the holiday resort was violently breached by a gang of three heavily armed robbers who targeted the isolated cabins. The intruders blindsided the family, aggressively confronting them and forcing their way into the living quarters. Driven by an absolute and desperate instinct to shield his family and his small daughter who were trapped in the room, Eugene immediately moved to confront the armed men. During the brief, intense altercation that ensued, one of the primary attackers pulled out a handgun and fired a shot at point-blank range. The bullet struck Eugene directly in his stomach, causing massive internal damage. The criminals grabbed what valuables they could find and fled the resort property into the darkness, leaving a scene of chaos and trauma behind them. Emergency medical services rushed the critically wounded father to a hospital in Pretoria, where trauma surgeons immediately initiated a series of emergency procedures in a desperate bid to stabilize him. Due to the extensive internal bleeding caused by the gunshot wound, medical teams were forced to completely remove his right kidney. He spent the next fourteen days fighting for his life in the intensive care unit, showing brief signs of stability but remaining in a highly critical condition. The long battle ended on the afternoon of October 19, 2015, when his body went into profound shock from the trauma and he passed away in the hospital. His widow, Charmaine, publicly expressed the family's deep devastation, remembering him as an exceptionally loving family man who always prioritized spending time with his children.
