Retief Cornelius Louw

27 August 1994 · Farm Klipkop, Weenen · KwaZulu-Natal · Shot
Age 28. On 27 August 1994, his body was found on the farm near the house. His hands had been tied behind his back with wire, and he had been shot in the neck with a 9mm pistol. Two .32-calibre bullets were found near his body. His firearm was also stolen. The circumstances indicated that he had been deliberately bound and shot, although the motive for the killing could not be established. There had reportedly been a dispute involving people stealing firewood from the farm, and there were also allegations concerning an assassin, but neither explanation was established as the motive for his death. In October 1994, two suspects were arrested after being identified by an informer, but there was insufficient evidence to charge them and they were released. No person was ultimately identified as responsible for Retief's murder. A judicial inquest was held in December 1995, and the matter remained unresolved.
