Age 32. On the evening of 12 July 2003, a gang of armed men infiltrated the Clarke family home with the intent to commit a robbery. Shaun attempted to defend his family and resist the intruders. During the struggle and ensuing gunfire, Shaun was fatally shot and died at the scene. His father, Brian Clarke (65 at the time), was shot in the chest and critically wounded. He survived the attack after receiving intensive medical care in the hospital. Shaun's mother and sister were tied up and terrorized during the ordeal but escaped physical injury. The attackers plundered the house and fled the scene with firearms, cash, and household electronic equipment.
Shaun Clarke was only 32 years old and was highly respected within the Camperdown and Richmond farming communities. His sudden death sent shockwaves through the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, as the Clarke family were well-known and long-standing residents of the area.
