Age 51. He was shot twice with his own .22 revolver inside the house. The state's case showed that he and an acquaintance had been drinking together at the property when an altercation broke out, after which he was shot, tied to a sofa, and the telephone line was cut.Regarding arrests, local police arrested Dean Malgas, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident.Regarding convictions, High Court Judge Ronnie Pillay presided over the criminal trial in Grahamstown. On 6 November 2007, the court rejected claims of self-defense but determined the killing was not premeditated, ultimately convicting Malgas of culpable homicide instead of murder. Malgas was sentenced to three years of correctional supervision under section 276(1)(h) of the Criminal Procedure Act.
