Knight Daniel "Dan"

17 October 2013 · Outlook Farm, Himeville · KwaZulu-Natal · Beaten
Age 56. Daniel Knight, universally known as Dan to his friends and family, was a fifty-six-year-old timber contractor and dedicated natural sportsman who was deeply rooted in the Underberg and Himeville communities. He was a keen Comrades Marathon runner, Dusi canoeist, mountain biker, and a member of the inland KwaZulu-Natal bowling team. He lived with his partner of eighteen years, Beth Bucher, at their beautiful Outlook farm property in Himeville, near Underberg, in the Southern Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal. The horrifying home invasion unfolded on the night of Thursday, October 17, 2013, just hours before what would have been his fifty-six birthday. The targeted ambush was planned a day earlier by a gang of five men who believed that Dan kept large amounts of cash on the property to pay his timber employees. The perpetrators, some of whom were linked to a subcontractor working for him, traveled to Underberg and hid in a forest on the farm boundary until nightfall to stake out the homestead. Around eight o'clock in the evening, Beth temporarily opened the house scullery door for their dogs and left it unlocked, giving the men wearing balaclavas the exact opportunity they needed to breach the home. The attackers quickly accosted and overpowered the couple, demanding cash and the keys to the family safe. When Dan truthfully told the men that there was no cash on the premises and desperately offered to write them a cheque instead, the intruders turned exceptionally violent. They bound the couple's hands and feet with plastic cable ties and tightly gagged their mouths with surgical bandages. The gang then dragged Beth into the bathroom, where she was restrained and tied to the pedestal of the washbasin. While she was confined to the bathroom, the attackers assaulted Dan, inflicting severe physical trauma. The injuries sustained during the assault proved fatal, and he died at the scene. After the attack, the robbers ransacked the house, stealing cellphones, iPads, liquor, and shotguns, and loading the stolen goods into the couple's two vehicles—an Isuzu bakkie and a Toyota Land Cruiser—before fleeing the property. Beth endured over an hour trapped in the bathroom before she managed to break free, escape through the window, and run to neighboring farms to raise the alarm. The fatal assault on the timber contractor caused significant concern in the district, prompting fifty local farmers to stage a protest march outside the Himeville Magistrate's Court regarding rural safety.
